fast counting with find

I found myself needing a type of -limit -quit option in find. I couldn't see a built-in way to do it, even with GNU find. GNU find does let you count to 1 and quit, simply by using -quit, but not count to X then quit. Why do I want to quit at all? Why not just do find|wc -l? The dirs I'm scanning have about 200k files and are sometimes over NFS. Either way, a full find|wc takes a long time and a lot of resources, especially if the find has to do a stat (for mtime, etc). With find|wc my 1 find command took 10+ mins. With my new method, it's a few seconds. Here's the best solution I could think up. It's sub-optimal I'm sure (requires execs and a temp file), but I couldn't see an easier way to do it within the confines of find (without writing my own find, which I didn't want to do in this case). See the find command example on line 6 of the script. Arg 1 is a temp file path (normal race condition safety precautions apply). Revision control

Following up to last month's meeting topic, I'm wondering if anyone can help me choose a revision control system for my purposes. It'll be 2 developers (possibly more later, but always a small number). We'll share access into 1 box, but I'm thinking we'd prefer a system that lets us check out the complete source tree to our own dev boxes where we can code, and then merge back up changes. Also, it would be great if we could have a way to check out the current project into a dir that would then serve directly to the web (it's a php project). For example, I'd want a copy to dev on, the other guy would have a copy, and a 3rd copy (possibly older) would be the live web site. When commits are shown to be good, we'd check out into the live site. Hope that makes sense. I'm thinking CVS or subversion. I'm not sure this small project (maybe 30k lines of code) warrants the strangeness of git. Anything else I'm missing? I'd love to hear the pros/cons.

I can second Gilles' suggestion of using Buffalo products. I would use a matched pair with a matched pair of antennas, in bridge mode. MUUG Meeting, Nov 8, 7:30pm -- Migrating to IPv6

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 8. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Migrating to IPv6 This is your chance to try out IPv6 without having to set up a tunnel. Presenter Mark Jenkins will bring a wireless access point and provide auto-discoverable, IPv6-only access to everyone at the meeting, with real public addresses. (He'll use a tunnel for upstream). So, bring your laptops and other portables... the more platforms the merrier! After seeing who is and isn't able to use the connection, and what's actually out there in the cold world of IPv6-only addresses, Mark will present some basic theory, show how to do static configuration on GNU/Linux, and reflect on how the transition to IPv6 could play out. Time permitting, the challenge of witting reverse DNS entries with the aid of the $ORIGIN keyword in BIND will be demonstrated, and the ease of configuring the route advertisement daemon in use for the demonstration shown. Plus, this month's meeting is the MUUG annual general meeting, which includes the election of the MUUG board of directors for the 2011-2012 year, as well as a vote on a special resolution to amend the MUUG by-laws. (Members: Check your newsletter for details.) The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm, so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Non-members may be required to show photo ID at the security desk. Limited parking is available for free on the street, either on Ellice Ave. or on some of the intersecting streets. Indoor parking is also available nearby, at Portage Place, for $5.00 for the evening. Question: downloading Youtube videos

We have a client who has Linux in a soon to be triple boot installation and wants to download Youtube videos. The current Minitube for Mac and M$ have that feature available. The version in the Ubuntu repositories doesn't seem to do that. Is there anything *incredibly simple* for Mint/Ubuntu which will do the trick for a newbie? Later Mike
