I'm trying to create an image file from a CD mounted in a CD burner /DVD ROM drive, but I keep getting error messages when dd tries to read the CD disk. I'm using the dd command: dd if=/mnt/cdrom of=/temp/my_image.img bs=18k or dd if=/dev/hdb of=/temp/my_image.img bs=18k My operating system is Red Hat 9 installed in hda9. The cdrom does not have scsi emulation. I removed that command from the Grub boot because I got worse error messages when it was in effect. The drive is defined in /etc/fstab as: /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0 The error messages all look like this: hdb: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error} error=0x54 Is there another way to create an image file from a CD without dd?

It turns out that my BIOS and ATA interface cannot handle HDs bigger than 137 GB, so I am switching my new larger drives to another computer and using its drives in the P3 - ie, lots of copying drives and partitions. The dd command has worked well, and saves me a lot of time compared to copying in DOS. Thanks. I have 2 other problems: 1) I need to copy a primary partition on one drive to a logical partition on another. I assume that if I do something like this: # dd if=/dev/hdc3 of=/dev/hda7 bs=1M that the boot sector of the primary will overwrite partition info in the boot sector of the logical partition, destroying extended partition info. Is there a way around this? If I create the logical partition with Partition Magic under DOS and copy into it, skipping the first sector, will that work? 2) I also installed Linux in my P4. When Linux complained it couldn't read the partition tables for sda, I let it rewrite them, thinking this was the new drive I put in. Instead, it was my serial ATA drive array. I have it configured to show up as one large drive under Windows. A large number of ATI video files were stored on the drive, which shows up in Linux as 2 drives (unallocated) and continues to show up in Windows as 1 drive - but now unallocated. The original drive was partitioned as a single FAT32 partition for the whole drive. My guess is that the data is still intact, and could be recovered if I put the right partition info onto the boot sector. Is there a simple way to recover this? If I created a new FAT32 partition in the "unallocated" space using Partition Magic in DOS or Windows, is that likely to recover the data? Also having some boot problems, but I think I can get around that. As a newbie, I'm getting into a little more than what Disk Druid can handle for me. Another followup to HFS+ partition on a USB drive

Not a problem. Just a followup. Last night I had a friend format the area I reserved for Mac stuff on the hard drive. It was formatted HFS+. The Mac mounts it and the M$ partitions fine. The Mac sees the ext3 fs as a UFS (Unix File System) drive and does not mount it. Linux doesn't see the HFS+ partition. The hardware browser program in Fedora 2 says there is no file system on the partition. I haven't tried it under M$ yet. Past experience says it will only see the FAT32 partition. So far this drive seems to be happy with what I throw on it. Apart from the HFS+, everything is EASY to do with Linux. Video DVD question

The end result is I want to burn a video DVD I can throw in a console unit. Here is what I've done so far... I've obtained a sample video file from the net (an AVI I think). I ran a program called videotrans to translate into a VOB file. MPlayer plays them both. Then I used a package called dvdauthor to take the VOB file and create a directory structure as well as the IFO and BUP files. It turns out I have to change the permissions of everything created by this package to 777 or I get a certain set of errors. Next I tried both k3b and (I think - this was over a month ago) growisofs separately to see if anything will burn. Apparently there were problems with the Fedora version of the cdrecord package so I updated it from the source. Both programs choke. The messages seem to be related to file names. I tried altering the names to what it said was missing to see if it would help. No joy. Am I close? If so, what am I missing? Is there a better way of doing this? With a handy little GPS unit, you can know exactly where you are in the world down to a few meters at the push of a button. In Part 2 of last month's presentation, Shawn Wallbridge will present on web-based mapping. He will primarily be covering Mapserver, a web-based mapping application by the University of Minnesota. Quick question about formatting a Mac partition under Linux

How? I'm able to do Linux and M$ partitions successfully on my PC with Fedora 2. I want to see how to do it so I can write an article on it. I'll admit to only a one hour google search today (I was so happy to get ANYTHING working I had to test it as soon as I could). I found a lot of pages referring to Linux on the Mac and a bunch of pages saying they were out of date with the 2.4 kernel. I *should* be able to test the Mac/HFS partition this weekend. The odd thing is if I had the USB card for my Apple// I could format it there... Unfortunately I've already blown a bunch of money on the new harddrive (on sale at Itech) and USB box. Need a CPU upgrade

This is not a Unix-related question (yet), but I was wondering if anyone on this list knew of a vendor who can get 1 GHz Pentium 3 (Slot 1) CPUs for a Compaq ProLiant DL380 3U rack-mount server. We have this server at work with a single 733 MHz P3, and it's dual-capable. Our "Preferred" vendor is Insight Canada, and they want $ 2,641 for a 1 GHz P3. Yep, more than the cost of a new server or two for a stinkin' 5.5-year-old CPU which was US$990 at introduction! And I know they're available for less than $100 on eBay. Apparently <someone much higher up in the organization> thinks a 97% discount would look bad if it became public that we bought something via eBay. So, any suggestions?

I looked at the site Gilles suggested earlier. I was in a bit of a rush (as I am from time to time). They want people to sign up as developers before downloading source code. That's not for me. As a result I found an alternative which was last updated around 2003. It's at http://www.mars.org/home/rob/proj/hfs/ and the package is called hfstools. It compiles and installs really fast. Unfortunately, although I gave it a 100GB partition, it only formatted two GB of it. Apart from that... No complaints. I'll keep hunting for a while. Eventually I might get a Mac (owned by one of my friends) to format the partition for me. Later Mike P.S. MUUG Board Elections - FINAL CALL for Nominations

Hear ye, hear ye! This is the FINAL CALL for nominees to participate in the election for the MUUG board. Those elected will serve from October 2005 until October 2006. The deadline to nominate yourself, or someone else, is September 27, 2005. Instructions follow. The MUUG board is charged with coordinating the meetings and other events by the group. It's fun, and you get a role in guiding the group. All are encouraged to apply. ----------------------- MUUG Board Elections - Call for Nominations Every October the Manitoba Unix User Group holds its Annual Meeting, the main goals of which are to elect a new Board of Directors and to pass any special resolutions. (Aside from that, it is a regular meeting) Any member in good standing can be nominated to run for a position.
