There are problems on the main site so for the moment we are making it available on the alternate site http://members.shaw.ca/digitalcivilization. The current issue was delayed for the 30'th anniversary issue to be published. The magazine is a free PDF so enjoy... Like last time I was editor, I apologise to any current advertisers as I do not have access to the ads or graphics normally in the magazine. The next issue will be put together during the first weekend in August and should appear (somewhere) shortly thereafter. Anybody wishing to contribute articles can contact me at this address. How to modify file times?

I love SUSE but I can't stand the way it implements cron. Instead of using the usual /etc/crontab file to schedule cron.daily, weekly etc, it creates files in /var/spool/cron/lastrun and uses the file dates to schedule it's next run. And it's completely arbitrary as to when things run. If you create something in cron.weekly, it will execute it immediately and then continue to execute it at that same time every week. That doesn't sound so bad until you realize it uses the change timestamp, not the modify or access timestamp. And I'll give you one guess which timestamp you can't manually override with touch? You guessed it, it's the change timestamp. So if you want to change your scripts so that they run next Sunday at 4am, you have to change your system clock back to last Sunday and "touch" the files. I'm really hoping someone has a better solution than this... -- John Lange www.johnlange.ca

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 10. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Django This month, Bill Reid will discuss and demo Django, a high-level Python Web framework that encourages rapid development and clean, pragmatic design. It has many of the same advantages as Ruby on Rails. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm, so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Non-members may be required to show photo ID at the security desk. Limited parking is available for free on the street, either on Ellice Ave. or on some of the intersecting streets. Indoor parking is also available nearby, at Portage Place, for $3.00 for the evening. Suggestions for inexpensive RAID systems based on SATA disks?

Hi folks. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions to offer for inexpensive hardware RAID systems based on SATA disks? I'd prefer an independent RAID box, with a suitable low-cost interface to a server host, rather than suggestions such as "just buy a big enclosure and a bunch of SATA drives and a RAID card". I'm hoping for something cheaper than the $10-20K range for things like Dell's PowerVault MD3000. And preferably something I can easily populate with 3rd-party SATA drives, e.g. on empty hot-swap sleds, just to keep costs down. Thanks. -- Gilbert E. If I'm not mistaken, Red Hat just announced Enterprise Linux 5.2. How long might it be before we can expect to see the equivalent CentOS release? And does CentOS provide all of the features of RHEL "Advanced Platform"?

Hardware question

Sorry this is not a *nix question, but here goes: Should there be any problem mixing two DDR2-667 DIMMs (CAS 4-4-4-12) with two other DDR2-667 DIMMs (CAS 5-5-5-15)? Would you expect problems, or should the system just use the slower of the speeds?
