The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 11. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: What's new in OpenSUSE 11 John Lange will demo the recently released OpenSUSE 11 running the Gnome desktop, highlighting the major changes from the OpenSUSE 10.X series and focusing on its rich desktop features, especially things that go "whizz-bang!" such as the 3D Desktop Effects. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm, so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Non-members may be required to show photo ID at the security desk. Limited parking is available for free on the street, either on Ellice Ave. or on some of the intersecting streets. Indoor parking is also available nearby, at Portage Place, for $3.00 for the evening. MUUG Meeting, Oct 14, 7:30pm -- Got Spam? Fight Back!

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 14. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Got Spam? Fight Back! This month, MUUG regular Gilbert Detillieux will talk about spam, why it's a problem, and how to fight back. His presentation will focus on how he's configured sendmail's built-in features for blocking spam, as well as a few external mail filters (milters) that allow for more elaborate filtering. Milter-greylist, SpamAssassin and ClamAV will be featured. It's also election night in Canada, so make sure you go out and vote! Polls close at 8pm, so you should have plenty of time to vote before you come to the meeting. N access point

B has better range then G... I've gotten a block out of B, but only a building with G, wireless networks drop to B if the G signal isn't high enough, in addition, most wireless specs, the receive sensitivity is much higher for B then G, lastly, the power output is higher for B. But as for N access points, I still go with the router, turn off the DHCP server, and any NAT features and you have an access point. Some Belkin (shudders at suggesting this brand though) routers have an option in the internal web server to turn it into a Access Point... Ignore the WAN or Internet port on the router, plug your network into one of the "PC" ports. The main advantage of doing it this way, and the reason I do, is because then you also end up with 3 more ports as a switch in the AP location. Kevin

[OT] 802.11N access point.

Anyone have any suggestions on an 802.11n ACCESS POINT. I don't need a router or router like functionality... I just need an AP (wireless bridge). Just finding AP only systems is being unusually difficult as all I see in stores are routers. I'm sure the routers will work as APs but given my experience in this arena it is a bit hit or miss. I currently use a Linksys WAP54G but am looking for something a bit better (big file transfers are annoying over wireless) preferably with gigabit uplink. Does the whole 'draft' thing even matter anymore? Suggestions? -- Sean

MUUG Board Elections - FINAL CALL for Nominations

Hear ye, hear ye! This is the FINAL CALL for nominees to participate in the election for the MUUG board. Those elected will serve from October 2008 until October 2009. The deadline to nominate yourself, or someone else, is September 30, 2007. Instructions follow. The MUUG board is charged with coordinating the meetings and other events by the group. It's fun, and you get a role in guiding the group. All are encouraged to apply. ------------------------ MUUG Board Elections - Call for Nominations Every October the Manitoba Unix User Group holds its Annual Meeting, the main goals of which are to elect a new Board of Directors and to pass any special resolutions. (Aside from that, it is a regular meeting) Any MUUG member in good standing can be nomi-nated to run for a position on the Board. As of this writing, the following members of the cur-rent Board have let their names stand for re-election: Gilbert Detillieux Systems Analyst University of Manitoba Michael Doob Professor University of Manitoba Kevin McGregor Network Analyst City of Winnipeg Montana Quiring Systems Administrator University of Manitoba Doug Shewfelt Systems Specialist City of Winnipeg Adam Thompson Consultant athompso.net Of course, this list is just a starting point. The letter must contain the name, title, and employer of the nominee, along with a short (100 word or so) biography, and must contain the signatures of the nominee and one other member. The letter must be received no later than September 30, 2008, which is 14 days prior to the October 14 meeting. Although the by-laws require that the nominations be done in writing, with signatures, you can speed up the process by sending e-mail to <election(a)muug.mb.ca>, with the above information, and sending the signed paper copy later.
