I have a customer complaining. She's using Facebook. Her friend bought a refurbished laptop from me. I ran multiple diagnostics, replaced parts that didn't work. Reformatted the hard drive, installed a fresh copy of Windows XP Professional. Applied all updates. Installed Flash Player, Microsoft Security Essentials. Both IE 8, and the latest Firefox. Added Ghostery, and Flash for Firefox. Wireless network: WiFi-B. Now she complains the laptop is "freezing up". Rather than wait, she powers it down. I'm afraid of file system damage. This isn't the first time she came to me. And that laptop was not intended for her. Her last complaint was the wireless network "didn't work". It turned out she had no clue how to configure a router. I had to go over there and do it for her. She didn't know any of the router's passwords, I had to reset everything. I left with everything working. Now she's complaining it "freezes up". I'm afraid I lost patience and told her it's because of Facebook. But she's unapologetic, demanding I fix it. Again, that laptop was not intended for her. She needs something higher performance. That laptop was intended for the customer to whom it was sold. But now she's using it. Any recommendations? Thanks, Rob Dyck

WHRA postmaster?

Does anyone know who I would contact at Manitoba e-Health about the fact their outbound email is somewhat broken? Specifically, the auto-added disclaimer block creates very weird MIME that most of my mail programs don’t decode properly. SSD warranty - curious

Just got some new Samsung 840 series SSDs in stock and read the little included warranty booklet (on dead trees). It's the first I've seen to include bytes-written count as a warranty parameter! It states you get 3-years OR "when the SSD has exceeded its TBW (Total Bytes Written, though some websites call this Terabytes Written, but those are 2 hugely different things!) threshold as may be indicated by Samsung's Magician Software", whichever comes first. Not a bad idea, really, although: a) How the heck can we as users estimate how many bytes we're going to write in the average year, even within 2 orders of magnitude? b) I assume the "Magician Software" will not run on linux/bsd. Their 840 PRO series gives a 5-year warranty and what sounds like a higher TBW. Now that Intel is moving to 1 and 3-year warranties, and Samsung drives so far don't sound (in reviews/comments) like total garbage, they might be worth looking at. Looking at their web site, I see some conflicting information. http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/ht… says "Samsung is so confident that a typical client-PC user will never be able to exhaust the lifespan of the drive that it is guaranteeing its SSDs for unlimited mileage - there are no workload restrictions in the 840 Series’ 3-year limited warranty." Huh? Doesn't that contradict the dead tree in my hands? You can see a copy of the dead tree here: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/samsungssd/warranty.ht… Nowhere can I see to find the exact for-warranty-purposes TBW number for the 840 series. Oh well. I guess the warranty is 3 years unless their RMA dept determines that you've exceeded some magic unknown threshold that probably only they know about and always works in their favor ;-)

3+ monitors

Has anyone had success with 3+ monitors (on 1 computer) in linux with Core2-era hardware (or otherwise)? Note: I don't care about 3D performance at all, just 2D linux desktop (no compiz!) with the very rare 3D app that won't be at all important. I have an existing 2 monitor setup but I want to move to 3 or 4 after a recent monitor death. I see two ways forward, but both have uncertainty: 1. Add a 2nd (cheap) PCIex card to my Intel D975X board (has 1 x16, 1 x8, 1 x4 slots). 2. Swap out my existing card for a new ATI 3-display card (like 7750). #1 will be cheaper (I probably have some here already), #2 may be faster, but will require many expensive adapters to be purchased, as well as the card. Sounds easy. But there are many gotchas: 1. a) 2nd card may not work at all: some boards have issues, some cards have issues. b) 2nd card may work, but at 1x. I previously ran a system on x1 video (even though it was in an x4 slot!) and even 2D was slowed down by the x1. x4 is the bare minimum I want to run. Many board/card combos don't "downspeed" very well, and often just go to x1 c) will linux be happy with 2 video cards (with my board)? 2. a) do the free radeon drivers support the new Eyefinity (3+ monitor) spec or am I forced into proprietary drivers (yuck)? b) and do the proprietary drivers even support it and happily in xrandr and xinerama, etc? While in theory there should be no problems, I've learned "weird" video card issues abound in reality. I'm trying to minimize delays waiting for parts to try, and expense. As such, notes like "I've done it with X and Y" would be most helpful! Or, "I'm really really sure X and Y should work" would also help :-) PS: I'll be doing super thin bezel models in the shape of "BO" (2 horizontal, 1 vertical) with one of the B's inverted because the bottom bezels aren't as small as the top ones.
