A reminder that the MUUG online meeting will be on BBB this evening... The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting online, on Tuesday, October 18th, at 7:30pm: Tracking Aircraft with an RTL-SDR and a RaspberryPi Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast, or ADS-B, is a modern aircraft safety system that broadcasts an aircraft's identification and position data to other aircraft and ground stations. Using an off-the-shelf RTL-SDR receiver and a RaspberryPi, we can decode these messages to track aircraft in our vicinity. Wyatt will show how to install the dump1090 software used to decode the messages, and the different third-party aggregation sites that collect ADS-B information to provide real-time flight tracking around the world. This will once again be an online meeting. Stay tuned to our muug.ca home page for the official URL, which will be made available about a half hour before the meeting starts. (Reload the page if you don't see the link, or if there are issues with connecting.) The group normally holds its meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. A reminder that the MUUG online meeting will be on BBB this evening... The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting online, on Tuesday, September 13th, at 7:30pm: RTFM Duo This month, we'll have a couple short RTFM-style presentations. First, Trevor Cordes (who normally prefers working quietly behind the scenes on coding or newsletter editing) will be presenting on rsyslog. Next, Brad Vokey will be presenting on bpytop. Fighting the PHPower with rsyslog Help! The new PHP8 has made normal, everyday scripting practices an error on screen or in the logfiles. Fight the power and reclaim your PHP sanity using rsyslog and its filtering options. But beware, rsyslog itself is a minefield of inexplicableness. Trevor Cordes will lead you on a quick and easy path to victory over PHP, and any other daemon you may disagree with! Bpytop - a Python port and continuation of bashtop(1) This month Brad Vokey will give us a quick demonstration of byptop. Bpytop is a colorful, efficient, responsive, terminal resource monitor that shows usage and stats for your processor, memory, disks, network and processes. Written in Python by the original author of bashtop, the author claims it is faster and much better supported. Add some bling to your original old top(1) command! Oh joy, Spectre is back. New kernels are out to fix the new retbleed. Retbleed preys upon the fix for Spectre-2 that we all had fun with a few years ago. Some people thought the retpoline wasn't enough of a fix and that returns could also be a target for these gadget & sidechannel attacks. Turns out they were right. Unlike past vulns that were only, or worse, on Intel, this one is slightly worse on AMD. Anyhow, early numbers predict a 12-25% slowdown of your box once you update and reboot. Joy indeed! BGP data in real time?

Does anyone know of a good way for monitoring BGP route data in near real-time? There are several public BGPPlay sites out there but the data seems delayed? That being said, one challenge I'm having with the sites is the time stamps don't say which timezone they are in. I assume it is UTC but if that is the case then the data is at least a couple hours old on any of the sites I've found. John
