telnet 192.168.0.254 333 returned the following message; " Unable to connect to remote host: No route to host". So I opened up the User's Guide and page 27 showed "telnet 192.168.0.1 333". I tried that one and was cheerfully greeted with a password prompt which I responded to by pressing the enter key. The heading for the section that the "telnet 192.168.0.1 333" was in was titled changing passwords and I didn't want to muck anything so I typed "quit" at the prompt and exited. Perhaps I could have explored a bit but the chicken in me took over and I didn't go poking around. I began to wonder if I might be better off in the long run to get a new broadband router. I saw one on futureshop.ca that was a D-Link 4 Port 10/100BT Broadband Router for $139.99. The set up I have now is a router and a hub. There are possibly other benefits than making my workspace a little cleaner and more compact but I don't know what they are. The spec sheet on the broadband router mentioned linux support. I don't know what linux support might have meant but I suspect that it was a program to let you get at the router settings for allowing outsiders to get at my PC by allowing traffic on certain ports. I use Shaw Internet as my ISP and way back (maybe four or five years ago) when I got my router a friend who set it up for me poked a "computer/server name?" into the router and since then I've been on the net. Prior to getting the router I was connected to the net until Shaw switched to assigning dynamic IP addresses. My friend said to get a router and that solved the problem for me. By the way I have two dula boot computers, one upstairs and one downstairs thats the reason for the HUB. IIRC from reading posts to the lists Shaw no longer needs that "computer/server name" to be put in the router. Watching my friend hook up the router I observed that it was a painless procedure. Hook up the cable modem to the router and then plug in the cables from the PC's into the HUB. Words like lease and MAC addresses stick in my mind and I was wondering if I will be presented with problems if and when I try replace my current router and hub with a single Broadband Router & Hub combination. I'm not very comfortable with networking as you can probably tell :-) Any comments on any of the above will be welcomed. I'm running Red Hat 7.3 (KDE) behind a firewall (a lan fed by a router). I'd like to be able to SSH into my computer from the outside world and wonder what needs to done to get at my machine. When I installed 7.3 I chose the NO firewall option. IPChicken displayed my IP address as it is known to the outside world and Leo Laporte of the Screen Savers TV show on Tech TV mentioned something about DMZ for people behind a firewall. I don't know what he was referring to. Detillieux) The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 10. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Network Traffic Monitoring with MRTG and SNMP At the January 9, 2001, meeting on Network Load Tuning, Gilbert Detillieux took us through some of the load and usage monitoring utilities that are available for UNIX, such as MRTG (available online), among others. However, the coverage of MRTG was rather brief, and didn't include any information on how to set it up. In this month's "Mini-HowTo" presentation, Gilbert will take us through MRTG in more detail, including how to set up a configuration file to monitor a network interface, and some of the configuration options that can be used to tune the output. The presentation will also briefly cover setting up SNMP under Linux, so that MRTG can get interface statistics from it, plus (time permitting) some tips on how to secure that setup. The meeting will also include our usual round-table discussion, plus some preliminary discussion on the proposed by-law amendments and the call for nominations for the MUUG board. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30 PM on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Here are the results of this work: 1. Revision of By-Laws Please see http://www.linux.ca/library/bylaws.shtml for the complete By-Laws document. I've highlighted a few changes here: "Purpose" The goal of the Canadian Linux Users' Exchange is to increase the use and appreciation in Canada of what is known as the Linux computer operating system and Open Source Software, by enhancing association and communication amongst its developers, users, suppliers, and the general public. [NOTE: The purpose of CLUE was left more or less the same as it was originally conceived. The only addition being the inclusion of Open Source Software to the Purpose statement.} "Membership" Members of the foundation shall be the respective applicants for the incorporation of the foundation until their resignations have been accepted, and such other qualified persons as shall be elected as members from time to time by a majority of the votes cast by the members present or represented by proxy at any duly constituted meeting of the members [NOTE: The membership section has been completely revised. Please be aware that the "official" members of CLUE as described in the by-laws are simply the executive. The by-laws no longer describe a formal membership, either individual or associate. This revision is based on the adoption of the "Foundation" model of operation. The "Foundation" model provides the most open method of organizing CLUE, allowing us to operate in the most flexible manner possible]. "Board of Directors" The property and business of the Corporation shall be managed by a board of ten directors of whom six shall constitute a quorum. This board shall consist of the Corporation's officers, which are to comprise: - A President - A Treasurer - A Secretary In addition to said officers, the Board will comprise seven "at-large" directors. [NOTE: We've eliminated the formal roles of 1st VP, 2nd VP, and Immediate past President from the By-Laws. This does not mean that these roles will never exist, it just means that legally, CLUE as an organization does not need them to function. As legally required, the only positions required are those that have been described here]. CLUE's Purpose As determined from the conversation on the admin(a)linux.ca mailing list, the following 7 areas have been identified as having the highest priority for the CLUE community. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT EACH PRIORITY IS LOOSELY DEFINED HERE! A CLUE Director will be expected to take responsibility for at least one priority, whether it is one that is listed here or one that they propose. [NOTE: The following list is in NO particular order. Also, the following is a list of 'obvious' needs. Everyone is welcome to propose additional priorities that they may wish to pursue when they apply for a Director position -see #3 below.] P1. Public Relations/Media relations Includes publication of press releases, marketing communications material, public speaking etc. P2. LUG Relations Includes maintaining contact with all Canadian LUGs. Will include definition and coordination of LUG benefit packages. P3. Linux.ca Domain utilization Includes webmaster responsibility for the linux.ca domain. Will include redesign of the website to better accomplish CLUE's goals. P4. Fund Raising Includes promotion of the Foundation funding model, i.e. The "buy a brick in our new building" model. Basically, anyone, individual or corporate can donate to CLUE and receive a designated sponsor-level. Details of this model will also be the responsibility of whomever takes on this job. P5. Benefits/SWAG etc. Includes identification or CLUE benefits, i.e. Magazine discounts, free CD's, T-Shirts, etc. P6. Business Development/Corporate Liaison Includes solicitation, development and maintenance of CLUE's corporate and affiliate relationships. This may include association with other non-profits, such as the Linux Professional Institute, Linux International, IEEE, etc. P7. Advocacy/Research Includes the creation of CLUE's advocacy program and identification of research avenues and how CLUE can leverage them. For example, the surveying of CLUE membership on a regular basis in order to provide information to those that would find that information of value. [NOTE: Some of the latter may be official positions/titles, ex. Director of Business Development. Others will not, ex. Benefits/SWAG.] 3. Executive Roles NOTE: APPLICATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR ALL EXECUTIVE ROLES INCLUDING ALL 7 REGIONAL DIRECTORS! The by-laws allow for 3 formal roles, President, Secretary and Treasurer and 7 Director roles which must be filled for the organization to legally function. How are we going to fill these roles? I'd like to at this time put out a CALL FOR APPLICATIONS for CLUE executives. Here's how this works: Information should include: Name, E-mail, Position sought, Bio, Desired Area(s) of Responsibility, Supporting Comments. Additionally, you may include: In two pages or less what role you'd like to fill and what you plan to accomplish while in that role. NOTE: The responsibilities for each role are open for you to define. For example, let's say I feel that I'm a very organized, detailed person who likes documentation and communicating with other Linux/OSS enthusiasts outside of my current LUG. In this case, I may offer to fulfill the Secretaries role and include the LUG Relations priority within that role. In my application, I'd describe how I intend to satisfy the organizations LUG Relations Priority, such as a Newsletter, etc. and provide examples (if available) of anything that makes me particularly capable of fulfilling the desired role. Please feel free to define your own role! If you do not feel comfortable in a role that already exists, propose a new role in your application. .pc files and pkgconfig

/usr/lib/pkgconfig/ .pc files I've never heard of these things before and I can't find any docs how to edit them correctly. I was trying to install a program called selectwn-0.4 which is suppose to allow you to change window managers easily, but it won't install since it can't 'see' GLIB >= 2.0.0 Selectwn-0.4 says to 'edit' my pkgconfig files, specifically glib.pc. I installed the required GTK library, glib-2.0.6.tar.gz, and mucked about with glib.pc but it didn't work.. Has anyone out there ever edited one of these? Is it even a good idea to mess with them? I thought app programs where suppose to 'find' stuff by looking in the PATH in .bash_profile. Here is my original glib.pc for GLib-1.2 prefix=/usr exec_prefix=/usr libdir=/usr/lib includedir=/usr/include Name: GLib Description: C Utility Library Version: 1.2.10 Libs: -L${libdir} -lglib Cflags: -I${includedir}/glib-1.2 -I${libdir}/glib/include The upgrade version to glib is in /usr/local/glib-2.0.6 I created a directory /usr/include/glib-2.0.6 put gmodule.h and gmodule.h version 2.0.6 in it. /usr/local/glib-2.0.6 has at least 6 .pc files, none of which have been transferred to /usr/lib/pkgconfig/ Should I put them there (Y/N)? I thought all this kind of stuff was suppose to be done automatically when installing libraries in the Linux these days. Somehow, I think I've made things worse. Anybody got any good advice?

To delete an entry do I merely delete from the beginning of a title section to just before the the next title section starts? Your first assumption is right. The "title" keyword begins a new section, and the following lines (indented for clarity) are all part of that same section, so you would delete them all together. However, if those lines were created by the installation of a particular kernel RPM, the removal of that RPM (with "rpm -e") would also modify the grub.conf file accordingly. It's all a question of how/why you want those lines removed, but under normal circumstances, you rarely have to edit grub.conf yourself under Red Hat Linux. -- Gilbert E. I'm using Red Hat 7.3 and KDE with a Epson C80 printer When I print I get a gui window on the screen and one of the sections called print systems asks me if I want to use one of the following; CUPS Print through an external program (generic) Generic UNIX LPD print system (default) LPR/LPRng Print System RLPR environment (Remote LPD server) What are all these things? Is there a preferred one? Red Hat 7.3 Installation on a XP Box

My friend wants to try Linux on his brand new 2.2 Ghz P4. He has a DSL connection to the internet from Manitoba Telecom (our provincial phone company). He is running Windows XP. Is there anything to watch out for when doing the install?
