Greeting Fellow Open Source Users The 2004 regina open source expo http://www.reginaopensourceexpo.org/ is fast approaching this May 7th and 8th. This is a chance to show off your knowledge and talent in the computer world. We need Presenters for the up and coming show. Help spread the word of open source and help people free themselves from the bonds of of software slavery. The Friday presentations are focused on the business community. So we have picked topics for the business world. E-commerce Where would business be on the Internet without this. If you have working knowledge of how to set up on-line store fronts, this would be for you. Share your knowledge with thousands. Developing on Linux If your a software developer this is the presentation for you. Business's need to have software designed around their business, Come talk about how open source works for them. File Services & Network Monitoring The heart beat of any computer system. The modern office can't live without files services. Along with that We need to monitor the networks to stop problems from happening. If your got experience with these come share your knowledge. Data Bases If Data Bases are your forte, Then We need you wisdom here. Word Processing Where would the business world be with the mighty word processor. We all know what is the king out there. Come talk about the prince of word processing that soon will be King. Spread Sheets If word processing is king then Spread Sheets are Queen of business. Show off your expertise on What is known as the back bone of business. On the Saturday the focus is on the home user. Yes this is for beginners. Now where should we start... Lets show people how easy it is to install on their home computer. The HOW-TO of installing linux. We have all done this before. Now it is time to show off how easy it is for the common Man, or Woman to install the best damn operating system in the world. Introduction to Web Browsers What is the Internet without these must have apps. We need some one with the skills to install and configure plug ins. If you have the Coolest Tricked out web browsers then this is the chance to share your knowledge with the world. Introduction to E-Mail The Killer Application of the Internet. Who doesn't have E-mail... We need some one that is familiar with the E-mail clients and how to configure them. Introduction to Chat Programs Communication is king on the Internet. Chat programs are one of the hot items of the Internet. If you have spent hours and hours and hours chatting to people all over the world. Come share your knowledge Introductions into Music Programs With the advent of P2P programs Everyone now stock piles music on their computers. If your the King DJ. We need your knowledge. Come show the world the latest in technology to get the hip back into your hop Introduction to CD Burning What is all that music if you don't burn it to a CD and play it. Along with music we use CD's for storage and back ups. Come show Us how it is all done. Introduction into Graphics Editors With Digital camera's we all are storing more and more pics on our computers. Show off your artistic side with taking the head off your uncle Floyd and putting on your favorite super model. Skills we all wish we had but need the know how of an expert like yourself. All this presentations should be about 30 Min's presenting and a 15 Min's Q/A after. Come out and support your open source community and lets make the 2004 expo a jewel in your Crown. Month name to number, and sendmail

Last night a couple of questions came up (both from Steve, I think). The first is for a filter that converts a month name to a month number from within an ls listing. Tip in the newsletter

I tried the tip in the newsletter about redirecting the updates to the MUUG site. I updated today. It took less than 30 seconds (as opposed to an hour and a bit). It took a bit to figure out how to manually edit the file rather than use patch. The whole thing turned out to be really simple. Just replace two URLs. Thanks guys... Later Mike P.S. RH 9 -> Fedora upgrade through Yum... Success!

Just a short note from Fedora Core 1 on a box that was previously RH 9. Upgrade steps are simple -- no CDs necessary, no reboots needed other than to bring up your new kernel. Install Yum. Edit /etc/yum.conf to point to a Fedora mirror (use Gilbert's patches, but change $releasever to 1) Run "yum upgrade" Reboot into your new kernel That's a bit of a stretch. I had to delete one rpm that was causing a dependency failure, but it wasn't necessary anyway. I also had to edit /boot/grub/grub.conf to default to the new kernel (not sure if that was the upgrade that defaulted it to the old one). And, more strangely, my eth0 didn't work even though it was detected (wouldn't receive packets even though they were being sent). eth1 worked fine, though. I noticed Fedora has some hardware management stuff that comes up on boot, this behaviour is classic interrupt stomping. Enjoy. Sean -- Sean A. Walberg <sean(a)ertw.com> http://www.ertw.com

Detillieux) The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 10. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: The Squid Web Proxy Kevin McGregor will provide an introduction to setting up web caching using the Squid web proxy software. This will include installation, configuration, monitoring and, if there's time, a demonstration. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30 PM on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our new meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. port forwarding and ssh

My Router is a Netgear RP614 and I can successfully ping the address reported by www.ipchicken.com. Netgear's port forwarding screen shows SERVICES as "192.168.0" and nothing for the fourth group of digit(s). I tried to change the SERVICES to read "192.168.0.1" to but when I tried to change the services to read "192.168.0.1" Netgear pops up a "[JavaScript Application]" box saying "invalid service". I can ssh into my linuxbox downstairs (192.168.0.3) with no problem. Also on the NetGear Port Forwarding screen: Under the column headed "Service Name" 20-22 is shown, and to the far right is the Server IP address of 192.168.0.1 is shown. ipchicken.com reports the address the outside world can use to log into my system and when I ssh to what ipchicken.com says I get the ssh message saying "connection refused". I'm *guessing* that maybe SERVICES should be set to what ipchicken reported instead of a local lan address. Is that a bad guess? Windows Services for Unix

Microsoft must feel threaten. They are now not charging for their Services for Unix (SFU). It looks pretty extensive. Of course MS's motive is to encourage migration of Unix apps to the Windows platform. But on the otherhand it is nice to see Microsoft enhancing their OS to interoperate with Unix. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/sfu/ Enjoy, Bill

Perl

Thanks to Sean for his Perl talk on Jan 13. I would like to recommend: Perl: The Programmer's Companion by Nigel Chapman, published by Wiley This book is aimed at programmers and focuses on how you can use Perl to work in familiar "programming idioms", i.e. get the job done. It makes a useful contrast to Larry Wall's "spare me no details" approach. He uses formal syntax diagrams for precision. By page 68 he has described enough of the language to launch into an example of a "single pass recursive descent compiler". To wit, the translator that converts his personal notation for syntax diagrams into the LaTeX notation that drives Mark Wooding's package for typesetting syntax diagrams. Obscure enough for you? :=) It's actually not a difficult read. He uses the same clear "what you need to know" style to go through Data Structures, Objects, Modules, and other Perl topics that have more detail and variability than you need to know all at once.
