A reminder that the MUUG meeting will be this evening, both in person and online... The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting IN PERSON, on Tuesday, May 2nd, at 7:30pm. Yes, that's a week early, i.e. the FIRST Tuesday of the month... Ansible AWX "AWX provides a web-based user interface, REST API, and task engine built on top of Ansible." In this presentation, Alberto Abrao will show how to set it up, and basic usage. Where to find the Meeting: Fortress Software Inc., 350 Keewatin St -- Unit #2 We have a new in-person meeting location now! Brad Vokey has graciously let us use his work office for our next in-person meeting. The meeting room will be open by 7:00 pm, with the actual meeting starting at 7:30 pm. If driving, enter the lot using the most north east entrance and drive around to the south west corner of the building (see route in map detail on poster linked below). You can use any of the free, ample, and safe parking spots that say "reserved" in front of units #1 through #4 before entering unit #2. Bus stops #30814 and #30880 (route 77) are only 150 meters away. The last bus leaves for Polo Park at 10:15 pm and for Garden City at 10:31 pm. Logan Ave. bus routes #19, #26, and #27 are a 600 meter (8 minute) walk to the south. For those unable or preferring not to attend in person, the meeting will also be available online, using BBB as usual. "washing" a fork/exec to force all groups

Just ran into this: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/8568596/procmail-disregards-etc-group# Postfix is doing something before/while it calls procmail for local delivery which strips all but the primary group of the recipient. This means any complicated pipe I have setup in procmail which relies on secondary groups fails with read perm errors. Sendmail doesn't do this stupidity (yay)! But I needed to (argh finally) use postfix on a box that needed 2 MTAs installed (and sendmail couldn't, in the end, do it properly). I consider the current stackoverflow answer to be a non-answer because Fedora/RHEL doesn't install procmail setgid/setuid anymore, and I don't want to fudge u+s g+s on every dnf update! I've solved the problem by "washing" the procmail piped-to command through sudo. I had to add to sudoers: fooman ALL=(fooman) NOPASSWD: /bin/php and change my procmail recipe pipe to: | /bin/sudo -u fooman /bin/php /needs/secondary/groups/to/read.php Ok great, it all works with postfix now just like it did with sendmail. The tricky question for you uber *nix geeks is: Can I achieve the same thing without the sudoers entry? In other words, is there a way to achieve this without root access, if someone didn't have root on the box, say. Too bad sudo isn't smart enough to say "hey, user fooman can run anything as user fooman" without a specific entry. Maybe an option for postfix? Maybe some magic sudo or su can do? Is an option to procmail possible or is this a problem that can *only* be solved by washing the call, somewhere along the line, through a setuid program (because once stripped by postfix they are gone forever)? I wonder why sendmail doesn't chop off the groups but postfix does.

New Old Dell Server

Hi folks, I recently came into possession of a brand new old machine and I'm wondering if anyone here might have an interest in it. The machine came to me as part of a bigger deal. I could deploy it but I don't necessarily need to so I would just as soon sell it instead. Dell PowerVault MD3200i 8 x 600GB drives installed 2U server with rails It was brand new in the box, bought by somebody I know in 2013, and he never got around to deploying it. I realize it's barely worth it due to the age, unless of course you are really into this specific hardware. If you or someone you know might be interested, email me.

Sendmail question

I have a user ("username") which has some mail in /var/share/mail/username (this is Solaris). The mail should have been forwarded, but for some reason has not been. Can the mail in the file above be somehow resent (re-received?) by sendmail or some process now that the user has configured /export/home/username/.forward?

This is off-topic, but has anyone seen this sort of thing in Windows 10? Red and purple text on a dark or black background renders poorly, but other colours look clearly defined. The MS Code sample has a lighter gray background, so isn't affected...? Kevin

Steam Decks and Steam Desks Join us this month for a foray into Linux gaming, presented by Chris Audet. We'll discuss Valve's Steam Deck, and similar handheld computers. We'll also cover some notable gaming Linux distros, such as Lakka, and ChimeraOS. RTFM: termdown - turn your terminal into a countdown timer (or stopwatch)! For this month's RTFM, Brad Vokey will give us a quick demonstration of some of the features of termdown, a python countdown timer for the terminal which he has used in the past to count down the MUUG virtual meeting breaks. *nix in action at the Skullspace Hax Festival March 31-April 2nd

Hey Folks, I'm organizing a festival at Skullspace (374 Donald) next weekend, Friday March 31 through Sunday April 2nd. https://hax.skullspace.ca Includes: * A movie night on Friday night * General interest talks from 9:30am to 3pm Saturday * Information security talks, 3pm-6pm Saturday * An early Saturday night party (6pm-10pm) (tickets required) * A music open mic and jam 11am-3pm Sunday * Electronics market and auction 3:30pm-5pm Aside from the Saturday night party these are free events. Directly relevant to MUUG members, one of our Saturday talks will specifically feature a *nix systems in action: At 10am James Paskaruk will present on the Zynthian Open Synth Platform which is a many featured synthesizer platform that runs on a Rapsberry Pi. This talk will be delivered remotely and we will make the video conference link available on our website for folks unable to make it in person. ---- We're branding the 3pm-6pm cyber security talks as Skullspace Security CSides, kind of a light weight BSides. For this we've already got 3 talks, including my *nix adjacent talk about PGP smart cards. (I may make a MUUG presentation of that subject matter some day) I know it's now very short notice ask, but I could still use an infosec talk or two at 4:30pm or 5pm. I have had more time to look around a bit, and see that what I'am looking for is classed as a "No/Low Code App Development" platform. Companies of course wish customers to use and implement new apps as cloud based apps, but some will support self-hosted instances of their platforms. Some commercial and open source examples include but not limited to, are: Retool Openblocks Joget ToolJet appsmith A recurring theme is the platform distribution and self hosting via Docker instances rather than a traditional software installation or Build process onto the native OS. Further comments welcome on No/Low Code App development platforms and the use of Docker for DEV and PROD self-hosted installations.
