You didn't say what distro you are running but unless its really old, mknod is depreciated in favour of udev. Has the system been rebooted? If not, hot swap often requires a refresh of the devices. This is often proprietary to the controller. Google hp_rescan for example. Also you may want to look at 'kpartx' . Unless there's something really crazy going on, those devices should be in order, meaning you can just increment the numbers. A "ls -alh /dev | grep sda" gives the following: brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 0 May 3 13:18 sda brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 1 May 3 13:19 sda1 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 2 May 3 13:18 sda2 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 5 May 3 13:18 sda5 Where 8 is the major number, and 0 is the minor number for sda. Be sure to specify a block device rather than a character one when using mknod.. I made that mistake and got something crazy at one point. MUUG Meeting, May 10, 7:30pm -- Linux mdadm and LDAP

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 10. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Topic Duo: Linux mdadm and LDAP In this day of 3 TB disk drives, it might have occurred to you that not having to restore the whole disk from backup if it fails would be wonderful. RAID can help you with that eventuality! Just buy another $140 3 TB drive and then, um... what? Kevin McGregor will cover the basics of RAID and the practice of creating and managing software RAID arrays in Linux. Rob Keizer will also be providing a mini-topic for tonight's meeting: The basics of LDAP. Rob will provide an overview of what LDAP is, what it does, and why it is used. Emphasis will be on applications of LDAP, and will include a basic demo of setting up and using LDAP with PAM. Before the break, Mike Pfaiffer will present an RTFM topic on navigating directories with the cd, pushd and popd commands, which are built in to the bash(1) and tcsh(1) shells. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). Missing disk device

I have a HP ProLiant DL360 G4p with a HP RAID card. The RAID card is connected to an external drive bay with 14 identical SCSI drives. With the RAID card I configured 7 mirrored pairs, which I then striped in software RAID (just messing around). The problem is I had the array working just fine, then after a reboot there was a problem with one of the drives (bay 2), so I replaced it (hot swap). Previously, that pair had been mirrored, so swapping the drive just started remirroring. The array should continue to work fine. But I can't mount it! The problem seems to be that a file under /dev/cciss is missing. I have: /dev/cciss/c1d0 /dev/cciss/c1d0p1 /dev/cciss/c1d1 /dev/cciss/c1d1p1 /dev/cciss/c1d2 /dev/cciss/c1d2p1 /dev/cciss/c1d3 /dev/cciss/c1d3p1 /dev/cciss/c1d4 /dev/cciss/c1d4p1 /dev/cciss/c1d5 /dev/cciss/c1d5p1 /dev/cciss/c1d6 ...but no /dev/cciss/c1d6p1! I don't know where it went. The disk is okay, and I can run fdisk and see the partition, which also seems fine. How do I re-create "c1d6p1"? There's a symlink I created to it: /dev/block/105:97. Do I use MAKEDEV? The information in ".blkid.tab" seems correct, as far as I can tell (which isn't far). Please help! Thanks, Kevin

REQ: Volunteer of a Clonezilla Guru for one day (maybe less)

Lindsay (the CLL supervisor) has asked if I could ask the folks at the MUUG if there is anyone in the club with Clonezilla experience who could show up for a Friday to go over our set up and see what we are missing. There are two of us working on the server and between the two of us we can almost get it working consistently. What we are doing should work (and did work for six machines a month ago). So far it looks like the machines are doing a diskless boot into Linux without installing the disk image. Rob may have more information than this. When it works it works like a champ. When it doesn't, we don't have a clue why... At least one of the five of us will be at Tuesdays meeting... Later Mike

Make it happen and you might win a prize. Competition details: While we want you to develop an application however you see fit, we imagine entries will fall into three rough classes. None of these are required in an entry and they are independent of the judging criteria: 1. Uses of the basic O'Reilly book and author data, such as building a different UI to books and authors. 2. Interesting data added to the Fluidinfo book and/or author objects. Entries in this class would not build applications. 3. Mini-ITX case recommendation?

There are lots of knowledgeable hardware folks out there, so I think it's fair to ask here. ;) I've got some EPIA-5000 mini-ITX boards. What's a good case+PSU for them?

SunFire V490 remote access

At work we have a Sun SunFire V490 test machine (with dev/production coming late summer). I'd like to access the console (e.g. for boot PROM access) remotely via network. Is there a built-in way to do that, similar to HP's iLO (integrated Lights-Out) management port? Or do I need some kind of serial->LAN adapter? Or just set up a PC running Linux beside it? :-) We've got lots of those kicking around!
