Detillieux) The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, January 8. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Mac OS X - A UNIX Operating System? This presentation will describe the BSD-UNIX underpinnings (Darwin) which comprise Apple's latest operating system, and the differences between Apple's GUI (Quartz & Aqua) running on UNIX and X-Windows. The presenter for this month will be Douglas Hamilton, Apple Product Professional at the University of Manitoba. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30 PM on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our new meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. Limited parking is available for free on the street, or in a lot across Ellice from IBM, for $1.00 for the evening. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Using Kickstart to Install Red Hat Linux Systems According to Red Hat, ``Many system administrators would prefer to use an automated installation method to install Red Hat Linux on their machines. To answer this need, Red Hat created the kickstart installation method. Using kickstart, a system administrator can create a single file containing the answers to all the questions that would normally be asked during a typical Red Hat Linux installation.'' ``Kickstart files can be kept on single server system, and read by individual computers during the installation. This installation method can support the use of a single kickstart file to install Red Hat Linux on multiple machines, making it ideal for network and system administrators.'' This month, John Schulz, from Pollard Banknote Ltd., will present a quick overview of Kickstart and demo the install process. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30 PM on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Mini-HOWTO's on NTP and XINETD This month, MUUG members Kevin McGregor and Gilbert Detillieux will each be covering a short topic, in a mini-HOWTO format. Kevin McGregor will be talking about NTP, the network time protocol, and the UNIX daemon which provides support for this protocol. Gilbert Detillieux will be talking about XINETD, a powerful replacement for the UNIX INETD daemon, used for launching numerous TCP and UDP based network services. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30 PM on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Detillieux) The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 9. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Consolidated Storage - SAN/NAS or something else? Although most I/T professionals agree on the benefits of consolidating storage, there is some discussion as to whether a Storage Area Network (SAN) or Network Attached Storage (NAS) is the best strategy. The answer is that it depends; but making the choice, especially in the face of new emerging technologies is difficult. This session will explain the concept of Consolidated Storage and its benefits. Then we will explore a few of the technologies available and on the near horizon for implementing a centralized storage infrastructure. Terry Baydock, Technical Sales Specialist with the Storage Systems Group at IBM Canada Ltd., will be our presenter for this session. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30 PM on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. Please note our meeting location: IBM Canada's offices in the TD Centre, at the corner of Portage and Main. I've received quite a few phone calls and e-mail queries about this, so I thought I'd let everyone know... *** The MUUG meeting is still on for tonight, as previously scheduled. *** Steve Moffat, our MUUG contact at IBM, has been in touch with the building security staff at the TD Centre, and they've told him that there will be no problem with us having access to the building after hours. So, it's business as usual. Apparent rumours about the TD Centre having been evacuated are nothing more than rumours. Hope to see you at the meeting, despite today's tragic events. -- Gilbert E. I've since found out that the Albert Street parkade has raised its evening/weekend rate to $2. You'll need to buy two $1 tickets (a loonie or 4 quarters for each of the two tickets) if you wish to park there for the evening of the meeting. -- Gilbert E. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Linux At The Movies Final Fantasy, Shrek, Pearl Harbor, Titanic, Lord of the Rings, and The Matrix. What do all these movies have in common? Linux. Linux was used in some way during the production of each movie. Some were rendered completely on Linux, some used Linux for specialized tasks. This presentation will cover what software is available for the budding filmmaker running Linux. And we will answer the question: "Can you make a movie entirely under Linux?" Shawn Wallbridge is the Systems Administrator at Frantic Films, one of Canada's leading Visual Effects studios. Shawn has covered network security topics under Linux at previous MUUG meetings, and returns for the September meeting with what should be a visually interesting presentation. So, we'll see you...
